EATING DISORDERS

Eating disorders are characterised by an abnormal attitude towards food that causes a change in eating habits and behaviour.

This can manifest itself in different ways; from anorexia, whereby an individual tries to maintain an incredibly low weight and often starves themselves or over-exercises, to bulimia which is typically a combination of binge eating and deliberate sickness or emptying of bowels to control weight.

Others can suffer with binge eating and find themselves compelled to overeat. Eating disorders holds serious health implications and can have long term physical, psychological and social implications.

Even without being diagnosed with any of the above, many people manifest negative relationships with food in their attitude and behaviour towards food. They may focus excessively on their weight and shape, fixate on particular food groups or make unhealthy choices about food.

    LUCY BERESFORD

    UKCP, MA, BA (HONS)

Lucy Beresford is a psychodynamic psychotherapist, working sensitively and without judgement with a range of clients, all grappling with some aspect of their life.

This could be anxiety, body image issues, coping with fame or being in the public eye, depression, eating disorders, relationship issues, writer’s or artist’s block, or a more general query about life – is this all there is? Or, why am I not yet where I thought I’d be?

Lucy tailors treatments to help clients make healthier choices and manifest the life they want. Her work is informed by a passion for story-telling and giving people the chance  (perhaps for the first time in their life) to feel heard. She hosts a weekly ‘Agony Aunt’ phone-show on LBC answering callers’ sex and relationship worries and is the author of 3 published novels and of the self-help book ‘Happy Relationships: at home, work and play’.
